How To Repair A Craftsman Torque Wrench

  1. Well, my Craftsman torque wrench has stopped reliably tightening fasteners to pre-determined tightness. A tap on the head and a spritz of penetration oil got the pawls engaging again merely there is nothing about the functioning of the torque-setting role that separates it from using a breaker bar at this betoken, there'south no setting depression enough to get it to click on a bolt in my vise.

The Craftsman warranty is upwardly, and while they talk near recalibration on their site, there's no information about it, and a telephone call to their back up number yielded no existent guarantees. "I call back we do that, allow me observe out if there'south a place to transport it and uhhhh telephone call you lot back" isn't exactly confindence inspiring. Now, I could take the affair apart myself and clean it up and lube it, simply lacking any kind of calibration equipment it'd still be guesswork and I'd probably stop upward screwing up my head gaskets earlier I fifty-fifty become effectually the block. Anybody always had a torque wrench restored? Who did it local/cyberspace business concern? I think for this particular project I'chiliad going to purchase a new wrench but if I can get mine restored I'll go for a pointer style 1 in the brusk term, if not maybe I'll simply become splash for a new dainty i (and some fuggin' mothballs and WD for my tool chest drawers).

    Any advice appreciated, cheers!

I would guess if it doesn't click at ALL at whatsoever setting, it's probably screwed upward enough that information technology's probably non worth the cost.

I take NO use for Sears anymore, and in fact, may never buy anything at that place again

Remember, though, Sears did not built your wrench. If you could discover who actually did, you might take better luck.

At this bespeak I"d be tempted to take it apart and take a look. Remember, a torque wrench only measures "torque," which is the product of the length of a lever with then much weight (mass)

In other words, a 1 ft long lever with a 30 lb weight is xxx ft-lbs.

  3. Yeah, Craftsman'due south support used to be dandy, back when you could just walk upwardly to the counter and throw the stupid thing down, this tag squad Lithuanian telephone support routine is laaame. If naught else volition probably endeavour to rebuild it myself but I take low expectations. Perhaps I tin can find a identify locally that has a calibration machine or I'll just do a maths-n-weights calibration on it when I'grand washed.
  4. Lost my organized religion in craftsman tools when they quit making them in america just couldnt afford snap on and so I went with Kobalt still not fabricated in America just less run effectually with warranty issues.
  5. I ruled out "Snap-on" when It took a yr to get my ratchet fixed. I couldn't become anybody to reply to my phone calls and when I finally tracked down a Snap-on truck the guy was very reluctant to help me crusade he said I didn't buy the ratchet from him. I still reluctantly use Craftsman but not their electric tools.
  6. $94 for a lifetime warranty is pretty alright, only I recollect after reading this GarageJournal HF tools thread I'm gonna pop for a $25 ane and a spare and like... throw it away when it stops working correct.
  7. Here goes...
Look up TeamTorque, only one I've come beyond lately.
most $50 merely to clean, lube and calibrate. Any bodily repairs extra...
So what Is your wrench worth!
    Is it a Micro-Tork? I'd dis-gather the head myself, clean and re-gather.
Digi-Tork? I'd still practice that before sending out for calibration.
Here's what I've seen on these.
Dorsum the setting down below the scale.
Yous accept a pivot just beneath the head of the wrench, held with a tiny circlip.
Remove it and the head will come off.
Below that is a tiny slice of bar stock...A fleck if you will...
It is probably dislodged, rendering you "clickless".
It will exist somewhat self explanatory hither, equally there is a slight depression or groove it needs to sit down in.
(Just for reference, IIRC, in that location ar only ii more pieces that can autumn out.
the little disc or plate with said depression and the spring).
Relocate the scrap and re-assemble and see if you oasis't cured information technology.
You've washed nothing to alter the calibration (that's done at the other end).
What happens is somebody backs the setting well beneath calibration and that slice get dislodged.
Reason I say have at information technology is those wrenches aren't much more new than possible repair costs, and you can check calibration against known "expert" wrenches afterward...
  8. Yep, that's what it looks like, pin under the head. I am gonna pull it apart and see if its fixable (subsequently I hitting the ChinaMart and get my car dorsum on the route).

Cheers for all the replies, this forum is basically the best.

  9. Cheers for the offer! I live out in BFE and I have other folks I tin borrow tools from if it comes to that (I tin probably take hold of circumvolve track guy beyond the street, it'southward easy to tell when he's in there, merely wait for the canis familiaris-maddening sound of open headers at WOT). Again, this forum rules.
  10. I'm a lilliputian belatedly to the tabular array on this ane just I haven't been logged in for a while. I also have the Craftsman torque wrenches and use them on my wheel as well so calibration was a concern. I am lucky enough to have a friend at a GE aircraft engine store so she was able to take mine in when they were new to be checked at their in house lab. If you know any local manufacturers detect out what they utilize as far as tools and service. They tin exist a cracking review source. I besides back my wrenches downward to the lowest setting after each utilize to preserve the scale/internals. Expert Luck.

I have a local company that repairs/calibrates all my non Mac Tools torque wrenches. They charge $50+ for calibration and add together for repairs. Yous will need to determine whether the wrench is worth a $75+ repair. Allow me know if I can assist. toolmanmike
